We learn from an intimate friend of the lata Mr, Cbenowetb, a resident at present of this city, that the deceased was a single man of nit ana, who has been engaged in late years in extensive farming and stock-raising. About four months ago, he left his home In the small town of Lisbon, Clarke county, and wtnt East on a general trip ot pleasure, visiting Niagara, Wash, ington, and all other prominent places of interest in the East. It is the opinion of his frierrds that ttmporary insanity, probably induced by the txeitement ot his trii, led him to the commission of his faial act. No symptom of the disease has ever been observed iu any member f-f the large and highly respectable family with which the deceased was connected. SlFAKATB BaLLOT-BjXBS FOR APPRAIS- iad Ticks,! The law regulating tbe election of Township Assessors for re-valucing real estate, requires the ballots to bj placed in a separate ballot-box. Hence the names of Assessors will not bo printed on the ieg-ular ticketv nor will they be printed at all, except for persons who specially order them Judges aud clerks of election will therefore bear in rrtni that for the election of Ileal Estate Asseesor, In each of tbe Districts designated by the Connty Auditor, there must be separate poll-books kept to record the names ot voters, and separate returns made to the County Auditor, duly certified, as in other cases. The Assessor so chosen will hold bis office for ten years and wkU OC required to make two returns during' his term, one In 1870 and one in 1875.' ' The Ceolaglcstl Corps t heir Beailof KeatarsW jr M hat nsia bees !). At a meeting of the State Geological Corps yesterday, there were present : Prof. J. S. Newberry, Chief Geologist; Prof. E. B. Andrews, Prof. Edward Orton, Hon; John H. Klippart, and Mr. G. It. Gilbert! Assistants; and Prof. W. G. Wormley, Chemist. The Corps have made a Geological recon-noisance of the State, and prepared a Geological map of the stme. The survey was commenced on the first of June, with the following organization Prof, J. S. Newberry, .Chief Geologist. Prof. E. B. Andrews, Prof. Edward Orton, and J. H. Klippart, Esq., Assistant Geologists.Ia addition to these officers, appointed by th Legislature, ten additional assistants have been constantly employed on the survey during the last thrte months. Of these all but two wero volunteer, receiving only.the payment of their traveling ex pauses for their- servioe. The surveying party was divided intx- fuor detachments, to whom different districts were assigned. Of these,' two, operating Jn;. the northern half of the State, were under th immediate supervision of the Chief Geologist; another, under Prof. Andrews, In the southeast quarter, and still another, under Prof. Orton, la the southwestern quarter ol tbe etate. The first duty assigned to the surveying party was to trace out the geographic.' extent of the different formations, so tbat aa accurate geological map could be made, and to gather material lor settling tbe much debated questions of tbe relations of the rocks ol Ohio to those of adjoining States. This part of the work is practically done. An accurate geological map, on a large scale, has been made, the doubtful questions in the geology of Ohio definitely settled, aud a large amount of interesting material gathered, illustrative of our ancient fljral and fauna, as well as of our mineral resources coal, Iron, salt, peat, iiypsum, clay, water lime, etc. The detailed examination' of the State by counties has also been begun, and care-lul surveys ot . Washington and Perry counties have been madet or are in progression, by Prof. Andrews; Greene and Montgomery by Prof. Orton, and of Cuya hoga and Erie counties by Prof. Newberry and his assistants. - Tiie specimens already collected, filling more than fifty boxes, will form the com uienceinentol a museum of economic and scientific ceolozv in this city. Sets of specimens are also collected for the prlnci pal colleges In the State. Pressor Newberry's first report will be presented to the Legislature in January next. Including, as It will, the records of the present half year's work, and the result ot twenty years' geological study and collection In Ohio by Prof. N-, it can not tail to contain much interesting and valuable matter. For this report fifty plates are already drawn, and more than one hundred analysis of our useful minerals made at the private cost of the Chief Geologist. This report will also include special reports on the geology of certain counties, and of regions of peculiar im portance as mining and manufacturing. Tbe Corps adjourned last evening to meet again early in January, to complete the re port and to make other arrangements. Capture of an Escapkd Jail Bird He PmroRiis new Exploits. 1 he negro man, Charles Be l, who escaped from the county Jtil on last Saturday with the "Gooseberry," was arrested at Pleasant Valley on Monday night, and returned to bis old quarters in the jail yesterday morning. Alter leaving "lodian Bill's" roost on Sunday night last, Bell went over to Milliard's, where he tried a little burglary by way ot change. Two stores were entered In that vil'iago, aud quite a portion of their contents appropriated, consisting in part ot a suit of clothing, a few notions etc. This done, Bell's next move was for Pleasant Valley, where, be says, it was his intention to "go through the store of Mrs. Brouson, which had heaps o money iu it." But before the accomplishment of this little act, a Cons-tible from Uilliard's, by the name of Hunter, overtook Bell and arrested him On a warrant charging him with burglary. Bell stubbornly resisted the officer, and refused either to wa k or ride in the direction of the county jail, but a horse was procured, Bell was lifted astride tbe animal and securely tied there, and the gloomy march In the darkness was taken up. The officer arrived here with his prisoner yesterday morninz, and consigned him to the care of Sheriff Gaver, knowing nothing of the fact that he had an escaped jail-bird under arrest. Bell was indicted originally for stealing a horse from Mr. R. Sinclair, of Frankllnton, some weeks ago, and will now have to answer to an additional charge of burglary. We are of the opinion that he will do. tbe State some service this time. Information for Housekeepers. Housekeepers will be gratified tu learn that a certain remedy has been discovered tor the cockroach evil. The manner of their taking off is described as follows by the New York Post. .It is well worth a trial by housewives, proprietors of retaurants and hotel keepets everywhere: A few days .-nice 1 was thinking of the game I had killed, and it created a yearning in me to kill something; so I determined, as the kitchen was overrun with cockroaches, to get at theto, and I was eminently successful; and I take pleasure in stating how I did it, for the benefit of my good couutry- women. Take carbonic acid and powdered camphor in equal parts; put them In abottlt; they will become fluid. With a painter's brush ot the size called a sash-tool, put the mixture on the cracks or places where the 'litters'' bidt; they will come out at once. It Is wonderful to see the heroism with which they move to certain death. Nothing more sublime in history; the extirpation is certain and complete. Reasskssmknt of Incomes. In accord ance with the instructions ot a circular trom the Commissioner ot Internal Reve nue, deputy assessors will make a thorough canvass of their divisions at once. Every house must be visited, and the names of the inmates obtained. Persons who have no income to be taxed must make an uffiJavit of that fact, aud those who have made no returns are to be summoned to appear at the office of the assessor, and in ca-e ot failure to respond are subject to a penalty A Wixdfall. Miss Maggie Care man formerly ol Kingston, Ross county, Onio, having some time ago removed to Saline county, Missouri, there marrfed a young man named W. S. Stanley, who was In rather poor circumstauces. About three weeks ago young Stanley received notice from England that bis father's brother, lately deceased, bad left him, by will, property to the amount ol trom ten; to filteen million collars. The Journal of yesterday, one of the proprietors of which is Dr. S. M. Smith.has the following: "A correspondent sends ns the following sensation Item, vouching for its correctness, lie professes to stand on his science: We regret to learn that our fellow-citizen, J. Sinelfungus, Eq., fell yesterday and fractured his Uer--tertto aa quortutn ventric- ulorum in so severe a manner as to necessi tate amputation, luis operation was performed hv.our fellow-tow nsman. Dr. Dry asdust, in a skilifal nianner,nd for the first ttme ta tne annai or wurycry. ouomu tne patient survive this operation It will give to Or. Drrasdnst a reputation far above any of hU brethren in the State.'" . The above la an attempt on tbe part of the correspondent to accomplish,; at least three things. He shows that he pos sesses no Christian feeling for a young man who has received tbe most terrible Injuries, simply because be ia poor and friendless. Mr. John Fitzpatrlck, who Is now lying in a ward of St.-ErancU' Hospital, with both his legs off, is UX Smelfungus, Esq.,". who Is suffering with something, expressed In tbe correspondent's native language, hog lutln, and it cannot be translated. Tbe poor young man is an Irishman, friend less and alone la this great country, but with a far betttr record for moral worth and hooeafy, we venture, than the ghoul who mocks at his calamities in the communication. He next -endeavors to bring, into ridicule an accomplished gentleman occupying a high position In his profession, so high that tbe stupid ass who penned tbe communication never could nor can comprehend the pathway thither. Doctor J. W. Hamilton, acknowledged to take rank among the first surgeons of the West, and who skillfully performed the operation for poor Fitzpatrlck, is "Dr. Dryasdust." His allusions to the "sensation item," etc refers to the writer of this, but is of no importance whatever, as he is used to being barked at by small curs, and gives them no heed. The communication Is unchristian, in decent and unjust, and if the truth were known it would lu all probability develop that its author stands so low In bis pro fession, as to be altogether unworthy the mere recognition of the accomplished Ciristian genUeman and teacher whom he has sought to ridicule. Poor Fitzpatrlck fortunately did not fall into his hands, and the writer ot this regards him simply as an ass. Mori Revknok. Some theater mana gers recently united in asking the Com mis sioner of Internal Revenue several ques tions relating to the license tax on places of amusement. The Bureau decides that all rooms, halls, etc., rented occasionally for theatrical representations are liable to the tax or license of $100 per annum; also, that exhibitions given in other places, rooms or halls not arranged and rented for theatrical purposes, under canvas or in temporary buildings, are liable to the license imposed in paragraphs 33 and 39, section 70, act of June 30th, 1861, in each State. Purchase of a Blooded Bull. The celebrated bull ' "bweepstakes," which carried off the second premium In that class at the late State Fair, passed thro-igb yesterday by rail for Newark. Mr. J. G. Hafgarty, of Licking county, purchased this animal from J. H. Pickrell at Decatur, 111 , for $710. "Sweepstakes " is five years old and weighs 23S5 pounds. He will be exhibited this wek at tbe Licking county Fair. A well dressed white woman was seen staggering on Gay street, near High, yes terday morning, in a pitiable condition of intoxication. "The necessary papers were riled at the office of the Secretary of State yesterday, incorporating the village of Cortland, in Trumbull county. Obstructions) on the Market. Mr. Local Editor: I do wish you would give the Market Master, or whoever else is to blame, particular jesse, for allowing the sidewalks, on market days to be so obstructed as to render the passage ot people almost impossible. The west side of Fourth street, between Town and State, now occupied as an outside butchers market, is particularly the subject ot complaint. From Town street north, almost to tbe alley, It is blocked up with' old stand?, dilapidated tables, and boxes, so as to render the passage ot buyers exceedingly difficult, A few days sincet while pressing my way through, 1 saw a lady's dress badly torn by catching on a piece of old furniture, and I thought that if I had been that lad's husband, there might have been a fuss raised. It is really a shame that the free passage of persons attending market, is thus to be obstructed. If the City Council has no power to pass an ordinance to remove such obstructions trom the sidewalk, then I go for selling out and removing the Market House to such point as the city can purchase ground sufficient lor the wants of Market People. S. The Journal of yesterday, one of the proprietors of which is Dr. S. M.
