OHIO, TUESDAY, AUGUST 22, 1871. NO. 198. VOL. XL. By earriar. ar won. ! AM, A LTIIO MAIIIFKiT. The msniftste of Mr. Thomas ilm.ru announcing himself as a candidate far State 8eoator, is chiefly remarkable for his assumption al onperioc political morality, its detraction of tbe Democratic candidate, and his (atxKK's) pledge, of what h will do in the very improbable event of his election. Aa to Mr. Thoxpsos' a0aiaatkn, Mr. Miller says : . ; ' ' '. "Ha waa not -when minated the choice of tbe majority mi tbe Deaaocrata of the district, and hia nomination waa not fairly and honorably obtaineuy- Thia is an appeal to party usages, and we propose to examine it in tbat light In the Senatorial Convention on the 20th of Jane, the balloting stood aa follows: ; 1st. r ... i Thompson.... -, ' Van Cteaf. 30 3. i .. There ia no dispute about the composition of that body; too two eoontfes were fally represented, and (herf war no contested mil Everything was dous legally and in order. Of course there were disappointments, and we rarely near of a nominating Conve tion in which they f do not occur, but if one man's , disappointment ia good ground for bolting a nomination, then good bye to all party organization, ormaity of action -for political purposes. There . was not half as hard swear log in the Democratic Convention over Thompson's nomination as there waa in tbe Radical committee last Saturday over Miller's. Mr. Thompson was fairly and honorably nominated on a square vote," and he ia ' accepted as the Desnoorati" canaidate to-day by ninety-nine oat of every hundred Democrats in the district. He will bury Miller under a majority on the second Tuesday of October that will probably retire that gentleman from politics, at least until he repents his disorganizing and selfish operations in thia canvass. He will than ba entitled to a back seat. Mr. Miller speaks in what might" be called "hilalatin" teems of forrupt practices to seize upon nominations," and boasts how Ae has been "honored with warinn. and rereated testimonials" of public favor, i Aa to "corrupt pmotices" in politics, Mr. Miller has a record well known to the older democrats of Franklin county. Tboy appreciate' his hou- egty know whether or not he has been a tricky politician, and an unscrupulous intriguant for" office. : Does he suppose they forget the history of hisoffice-seeking, of hia reliance on money, and of his secret political practices t We guess not. The "various and repeated tMtimnnials." of which he boasts the people have honored him, put into plain English means the paying offices he has secured through the Democratic party. He displays his gratitude in what people who know him best will esteem a characteristic way, by seeking the defeat "of the very party through which he laid the foundations of his fortunes. Does not this sound like treachery and bad faith t Evidently feeling something of this sort, be writes: "A strict adhesion to Democratic prin-inlu Miid maintenance of the Demo- a-atic Congrtawaian 41,000 votes that's ha lance to tahicl are are invited by Mr. Mills. ! The San Francisco papers state tbat since the demand for gold from the Atlantic States, the coin drafts have advanced to five per cent., or fifty dollars on the thousand. As a consequence of these heavy charges merchants who are called to remit specie to the Atlantic cities, it is stated, send the coin through the mails at a much lower cost. Thus, letter postage is three cents for half an ounce, or 218 grains. A twenty dollar gold piece weighs 516 grains, and one hundred of these coins weighs 51,600 grains, or slightly lees than 236 half ounces. Two thousand dollars in gold can therefore be transmitted for $7 08 in currency, whereas to remit by a coin drafts, one hundred dollars must be paid. This method of transmission- by. the Postoffice, it is stated, has reoently been adopted by the large firms in San Francisco, and within the last five months over nine million dollars iu sold have been sent in this way. The coin consists chiefly of double eagles, which are placed in strong cyuuoricai caro-uoara noxes, ilss tne German match boxes, and made ' to fit exactly in the interior. Gold bars, it is also stated, have been transmitted in this way. The effect of this operation, it is asserted,, has been to reduce the rate for coin drafts on the Atlantic cities to one-half of one per oent., or five dollars gold on every thousand dollars. - A tehrible tragedy occurred in Herkimer county. New York, Monday night, wherein an old man named Dyer Pang-burn murdered his wife and then hung himself. They lived at East Frankfort, and were laboring people, the wife being aoout twenty years rangDurn s junior, and having three children by a former marriage. They had been married about a year, but bad had many disairreementa. which finally resulted in the- horrible manner above mentioned. The oldest child testified that she was awakened by the cry of mnrder, proceeding from her mother, and on going to the door and looking into the kitchen, saw Pane-burn sitting upon tbe body of his wife and striking her with a potato-masher. When the wretch saw the children coming to the kitchen he yelled, "If you don't go back I'll give you some of the same sass." They went back and afterwards heard four or five more blows.
