Description-Abstract	The presence of carbon in fly ash makes air entrainment in concrete highly variable. For this reason, the Ohio Department of Transportation restricts fly ash carbon content to 3%. Fly Ash Direct, a Cincinnati based company, has developed a process to treat the higher range carbon content fly ashes. The objective of this research was to determine if the process is effective in controlling the adverse effects of carbon. Several ash types and carbon contents were used to produce 166 total concrete mixes. Various techniques were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the process. Tests for air content, slump, unit weight, temperature and compressive strength were conducted using ASTM specifications. Additionally, selected concrete mixes were used for petrographic analysis, rapid freeze/thaw tests, and admixture compatibility. It was found that the process had no adverse effects on the final product and that the process effectively controlled the effects of the carbon.
