AWARENESS Carvl Jane Robinson 'Miss Wheelchair America - 1974" The Key word that will close the gap between the handicapped and the non- handicapped...a gap that must be closed. Start closing that gap today! Invite them into the world in which we live, a privilege which we unwittingly deprive them because we do not know "their" world's limitation. Meet a wheelperson! Talk with him or her, and learn first-hand that: They are handicapped, not sick; they are self-sustaining, alert, capable; they don't want sympathy, they want performance demands made upon them—such demands upon any person, able or disabled, affords a challenge. They want only to be put on an equal footing with the able-bodied and allowed to compete as equals; they want to contribute to society, not receive from it. "The unique quality of man is his mind and what it produces. There are so many things you can do with your mind — without need for your limbs!" Visit "their" world. Let them acquaint you with it! Learn how the spirit of accomplishment pounds inside them. Marvel at the personal achievements of so many of them. Your awareness of them as fellow friends and individuals will go far to close the gap! SYMBOL of ACCESS This symbol indicates a building is especially equipped for the convenience of "wheel-people." MISS WHEELCHAIR AMERICA Standard Bearer of 500,000 Americans whose lives are lived in wheelchairs! Stressing that personal achievement, personality, intelligence, and the capability of the physically handicapped to compete with their able-bodied peers, is the objective of MWA. "MISS WHEELCHAIR OHIO - 1972" JULIE COCHRAN Selected in the first Miss Wheelchair competition in the spring of '72, Julie's title started the ball rolling! An Ohio State University graduate, with a B.S. degree in speech and hearing, Julie is now working on her Masters, and teaches speech therapy and also is in charge of inpatient therapy at Dodd Hall, O.S.U. "MISS WHEELCHAIR AMERICA - 1973" PATRICIA NEVIN Ambitious Pat Nevin, who won the first national title, a graduate of Wayne State University, Detroit, is active in wheelchair sports and activities. An officer in the Michigan Wheelchair Athletic Association, she also serves as a Recreational Director for the physically handicapped. "MISS WHEELCHAIR AMERICA - 1974" CARYL JANE ROBINSON Janie, a coed at the University of Houston, will honor her successor, Miss Wheelchair America — 1975, upon her selection in Columbus, in September of this year. "The basic gauge for determining the worth of any person is work and achievement. More than walking people, wheelchair persons need to have performance demands made upon them, so they may perform even better, and prove to be positive contributors to society, and thus gain self-esteem."
