Description	This volume of papers of Henry Otis Dwight consist of original drawings, photographs, documents, maps, and a partial narrative of 1st Lieut. Dwight's service in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry 20th Regiment. The drawings and approximately 39 photographs depict camp life and fellow officers during the Civil War from. Other documents include a dispatch from Gen U.S. Grant, maps of Kentucky, Tennessee, and South Carolina, and memorabilia from regimental reunions. Dwight's maps include: Sherman's march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia, through Columbia South Carolina, and north to Goldsboro, North Carolina, created by the War Department with color tracks of each wing of the Army; a hand-sketched map of Beaufort to South Edisto, South Carolina; a camp map from Bolivar, Tennessee; a battle map of an engagement at Middleburg, Tennessee; troop positions at Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing), Tennessee; a sketch of the battle of Fort Donelson; a sketch plan of Camp King Kentucky; and an unknown map sketched on the back of Ohio Adjutant General captain's commission document. Also of interest is a colonial Land Grant document from 1771 found by Dwight in South Carolina in 1865 and many military documents including commissions, general orders, promotion, and discharge papers. Henry Otis Dwight was born in Constantinople, Turkey to missionary parents. He traveled to the United States to attend college at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio, and while there in September 1861 enlisted as a private in Delaware's "Lenape Greys", subsequently mustered as Company D, 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He rose through the ranks to brevetted Captain before mustering out in July 1865. For four years of campaiging with Union armies in the west, he made notes and sketched. In November 1864 Harper's Magazine published an account he wrote on the Atlanta campaign. After the war he married and then returned to Turkey where he had a long and distinguished career as a missionary and author.
