Description
On
page

consists
of a
book
review
of
Lincoln’s
Lost
Speech
by
Elwell
Criseey
discussed
by
Harry
Barnard
of
Wilmette
,
Illinois
. The
book
review
appeared
in the
fall
1967
issue
of the
Lincoln
Herald
. In
which
,
Barnard
writes
,
“Mr
.
Crissey’s
Lincoln’s
Lost
Speech
constitutes
an
important
contribution
to
Lincolnianna
.
It
is
important
not
only
with
respect
to
Lincoln
literature
, but to
American
history
generally
. Its
scholarship
is
sound
, and
it
is
superbly
written
.
Wholly
fresh
insights
into
Abraham
Lincoln’s
career
would
seem
at this
late
date
too
much
to
expect
.
None
the
less
, this
book
contains
them. This
volume
also
fills
a
scholarship
void
; its
assembly
of
facts
concerning
the
famous
oration
Abraham
Lincoln
delivered
at
Bloomington
,
Illinois
,
May
29
,
1856
,
is
the
most
complete
that has
ever
been
set
down
. The
author
has
covered
every
facet
of this
crucial
episode
in
Lincoln’s
career
.
Beyond
question
,
I
think
, he
proves
his
theme
,
namely
: that
Lincoln’s
Lost
Speech
was
decisive
factor
in the
emergence
of
Lincoln
as a
national
leader
destined
for the
Presidency
. From
now
on,
historians
will have to
pay
more
attention
to that
speech
.
Moreover
,
Lincoln’s
Lost
Speech
is
a
fascinating
study
,
presenting
the
acrimonious
pros
and
cons
about
Lincoln’s
stupendous
oration
,
together
with the
various
controversial
viewpoints
taken
by a
number
of
scholars
. The
author
handles
these
elements
so
skillfully
they
seem
to
develop
some
of the
suspense
that
makes
a
good
mystery
story
. This
book
should have
immense
appeal
to
Lincoln
buffs
.
Almost
equally
it
should
appeal
to
readers
interested
in
re-living
that
strange
paranoid
era
in
our
nation
during
the
1830’s
,
‘40’s
and
‘50’s
–
the
gestation
period
of
our
American
Civil
War
.
I
do
not
know
of any
other
writer
who
has
recreated
the
slavery
issue
in
American
with
equal
emotional
impact
,
yet
without
sacrificing
sound
scholarship
.
Mr
.
Crissey
handles
his
Book
One
, The
Approach
of the
Slavery
Crisis
, with
splendid
discipline
;
narrating
these
moving
events
with
justifiable
passion
and also with
artistry
. A
plus
in this
remarkable
book
is
its
roster
of
notable
men
who
attended
the
Bloomington
Convention
and
heard
Lincoln’s
Lost
Speech
. The
author
has
compressed
into
meaty
thumbnail
biographies
the
personalities
of
seventy
leaders
who
organized
Illinois’
Republican
Party
and
later
hoisted
Lincoln
up
into the
national
limelight
. An
astonishing
number
of them
subsequently
achieved
military
and/or
political
fame
. This
volume
,
I
predict
, will
become
the
definitive
work
on
Lincoln’s
Bloomington
Speech
.
Probably
, also,
it
will
stir
some
healthy
controversy.”

by
Lloyd
Ostendorf
of
Dayton
,
Oho
in
1965
.
Lincoln
is
depicted
in an
angry
rage
.
