Description	This register contains the names of black and mixed-race men and women, showing written transcripts of deeds of emancipation or a statement to the fact that the individual produced documentation proving his or her freedom. Entries contain information such as the name, approximate age, physical description of the freed individual, as well as the date of officially-recorded freedom, name of owner or guardian, and date filed with the clerk of courts. Eleven pages of the 169-page volume are shown here. Each page measures 7.5 by 12 inches (19.05 by 30.48 cm). From 1804 to 1857, black persons in Ohio had to register their freedom papers with the clerk of courts of common pleas in the county where they desired to live or work. This registration was required by state law and the clerk of courts were to keep records containing a transcript of each freedom certificate or other written proof of freedom.
