The Reign of the Messiah.

1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem
of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out ot his roots :
2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the spirit ot wisdom and understanding, the spirit of
counsel and might, the spirit 01 knowledge, and of the
fear of the Lord ;
3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the
fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge alter the
sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of
his ears:
4 but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and
reprove with equity for the meek of the earth ; and he
shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with
the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins,
and faithlulness the girdle of his reins.
6 The wolf also snail dwell with the lamb, and the
leopard shall lie down with the kid ; and the can and
the young lion and the latling together; and a little
child shall lead them.
7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young
ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat
straw like the ox.
8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole oi
the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the
cockatrice' den.
9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy
mountain : for the earth shall be full of the knowledge
of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

Analysis.—It is prophesied that from the acterize Him, rmd that His reign should bring
house of David, in its obscurity, should come peace, and that the whole world should be
the Messiah, that God's spirit should be upon filled with the .saving knowledge of the Lord.

Questions for Study.—Did you ever see a stump
of a tree that had been cut*down? If it is a healthy
root, what is apt to take place after the tree is cut down?
What do you call a young tree growing up from the
stump, (or stem), or from the roots? What is it called
in the lesson ?* What shall rest on Him? Did Christ
have the Holy Spirit ? Matt. iii. 16. What is this
spirit called? What is meant by the spirit of might?
Mention some cases in which Christ showed His
power. How did Christ show a quick understanding?
How did He judge of men? John n. 25. Mention
some cases in which He showed His knowledge of

Personal Questions.—Is Christ your king? Have
you peace in your heart? Does Christ read every
thought? Does He see that "ou are trying with all
your heart to serve Him ?
