Description	The church was built in 1849 after archbishop John Purcell, caught in a severe storm at sea, promised God that if he survived he would build a church on the city's highest point. The stairs depicted here are on inside the building, though the church, also called the Church of the Steps, is well-known for its exterior staircase and the Good Friday tradition of "Praying the Steps" in which Catholics climb the 84 steep concrete steps while praying.
