Description	John James Piatt published Idyls and Lyrics of the Ohio Valley in 1893. Sixteen pages of the book are reproduced here and contain poems that reflect Piatt's Ohio heritage, including "Pioneer's Chimney" and "The Mower in Ohio." The book is 161 pages long and measures 5 by 7 inches (12.7 by 17.8 cm). John James Piatt (1835-1917) was born in Indiana and moved with his family to Franklinton, Ohio when he was six. He lived with his uncle in nearby Columbus, attended grammar classes at Capital University, and worked as a printer's devil at the Ohio State Journal. Piatt developed an interest in poetry and gained the attention of George Prentice, editor of the Louisville Journal. Prentice hired him as his secretary and published his poems in the Journal. Piatt served as a clerk in the department of the treasury starting in 1860. He and his wife Sarah Morgan Bryan Piatt made their home in Georgetown, where both continued to write poetry. After the Civil War, Piatt was affiliated with Cincinnati newspapers and served as librarian of the House of Representatives. He also served a consul to Ireland.
