This Book is presented to the Rev Levi
Farnsworth (By the donors) not so much
for its apparent or typographical worth
[illegible], a keepsake or memento from them
giving as it does a time history of what
transpired in our own immediate encircling
within the past generation
The donors offer it that the receiver
may see that when he contrasts the present
with the past as here recorded, and
compares the present Status of what is
now Considered a part of American freemen
With what their political or Legal Status
was considered by the history of Them [caret] as [written above line] given
by this Book - (and that too within the
last Score of years) = That it may cheer
and Strengthen is own heart in the
future hopes of our beloved Country =
and that it may lend to Verify
and Strengthen within his own breast
the certainty of all God's Promises to
the children of Men [underlined]
The offer is that as Philosopher [underlined] he
may point to it and contrast that day
and age with the present = as a testim
ony that "The World Moves" [underlined] =
And that as a Christian teacher he
may refer to it and Say - "Behold
what hath God Wrought [underlined]"
And more that when he Shall have
finished his Course, (and as we trust)
received a crown of Life - And that altho
-ugh his tongue may be Silent = he may
leave this Book that his Children &
Grand Children may read and learn.
What great changes [caret] has taken place [written above line] both in the political
and in the [illegible] world in So Short a time = it
being but the first of a faithful adherence
to the teaching of God's holy word to the children
