Description	James D. Brown (1845-1934) reported on matters in Athens County to his father John Brown in this one-page letter. He comments on race relations, a coal miners strike, and family matters. The letter measures 5.25 by 8.25 inches (13.34 by 20.95 cm). The Brown family was among the most prominent in Athens County. In 1867, John Brown and his son James D. Brown opened the first bank in Albany, appropriately named John Brown and Son. James D. Brown continued to operate the bank after his father's death in 1875.

Full Text	John Brown, Pres't J. D. Brown, Cash'r Bank of Athens Athens, O., June 12, 1874 Dear Father: Hope you are well and having a pleasant visit-we are all well- Hattie was here the first of the week to see Mr. Mireck-he had been to Washington on some R. R. business- with Col. Stevens and stopped off on his return home. Matters are quiet at Nelsonville-the darkies are quitting work-they claim that they did not know the Miners were on a strike- Business about as usual not much doing in Court. Stay as long as you wish-do not hurry home. I will write again the first of the week. James
