Description	This historical novel tells the story of a fictional young, beautiful white woman, Barbara Beaumont, taken captive by American Indians in Ohio. It details her escape, romance, and marriage to the handsome Lieutenant Beveridge. The love story is set in the time leading up to the War of 1812. Highly romanticized, the novel weaves fictionalized occurrences into the context of historically-accurate events. The defense of Fort Stephenson and the events of 1812 as they pertained to Lower Sandusky (now Fremont) are pivotal events in the book. Barbara is a strong heroine, who somehow manages to know just what to do in situations that have seasoned soldiers in confusion. The book is 384 pages long; the first chapter is included here. It measures 8" x 6" (20.32 x 15.24 cm). Francis Clinton Culley, who used the pseudonym Major Clinton, was born and raised in Fremont, Ohio. Having lost his father at an early age, he apprenticed out as a printer to the Fremont Journal. He subsequently worked at newspapers in Bowling Green (where he was the first editor of the Sentinel); Defiance, Eaton Rapids, Michigan; Los Angeles; and Valparaiso, Indiana. He eventually moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin where he founded the Daily Gazette and served as mayor there for one term. He also served in the 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.) for three years during the Civil War and rose to the rank of sergeant. Barbara was published in 1901. Although the novel did not receive critical acclaim elsewhere, the Fremont Journal declared it, "the finest historical novel that has been offered for American readers in many years."
