James
Leffel
(1806-1866)
was
born
in
Botetourt
County
,
Virginia
on
April
19
,
1806
. His
parents
moved
to
Ohio
before
his
first
birthday
and
settled
in
Springfield
. For
fifteen
years
Leffel
worked
as a
millwright
. In
1840
he
built
a
foundry
along
Buck
Creek
,
west
of
Springfield
, to
take
advantage
of a
growing
market
in
Springfield
for
small
iron
tools
such
as
sickles
and
knives
.
Over
the
next
several
years
,
Leffel
became
an
entrepreneur
with
partnerships
in a
cotton
mill
and a
stove
manufacturing
company
. He
became
interested
in
harnessing
water
power
from
Buck
Creek
and
experimented
with
hydraulics
and
water
wheels
. He
received
his
first
patent
in
1845
, for a "
new
and
useful
improvement
on a
bevel
centrifugal
water-wheel.
" In
1862
,
Leffel
perfected
and
received
a
patent
for a
reaction-type
turbine
wheel
. The
new
Leffel
wheel
had a
double
bucket
design
and would
thus
be
known
as the
Double
Turbine
Water
Wheel
. The
James
Leffel
and
Company
became
most
famous
for this
design
.
After
James
Leffel's
death
control
of the
company
passed
to his
son
and
son-in-law
. The
company
continued
to
thrive
,
producing
modifications
to the
original
water
wheel
concept
for
more
than a
century
.
During
the
twentieth
century
, the
company
produced
hydraulic
turbines
for
companies
in the
United
States
and as
far
away
as
Mexico
,
Japan
, and
Peru
.
