Description
This
2.5
by
4-inch
photograph
portrays
John
Baptist
Purcell
,
archbishop
of
Cincinnati
from
1833
to
1883
.
Purcell
was
born
in
County
Cork
,
Ireland
and
immigrated
to the
U
.
S
. at the
age
of
18
. He
studied
for the
priesthood
at
Mount
St
.
Mary's
Seminary
in
Maryland
and
completed
his
studies
in
Paris
,
where
he was
ordained
.
Purcell
later
returned
to
Maryland
as a
professor
and
later
president
of the
seminary
. In
1833
, he was
appointed
bishop
of
Cincinnati
and
toured
the
scattered
missionary
churches
of
Ohio
. A
series
of
debates
with
Alexander
Campbell
,
founder
of the
Disciples
of
Christ
,
established
Purcell
as the
leading
Catholic
spokesman
in the
Midwest
.
Purcell
allowed
the
German
Catholic
immigrants
of the
diocese
to
manage
their
own
affairs
as
much
as
possible
, and
maintained
good
relations
with them in an
era
when
German
and
Irish
immigrants
often
clashed
.
Purcell
spoke
out
against
slavery
and
called
for the
emancipation
of
African
Americans
; he was the
only
American
Catholic
bishop
to
do
so
. The
elderly
Purcell
found
himself
in the
midst
of a
scandal
in
1878
.
Many
immigrants
distrusted
banks
and
placed
their
savings
in the
hands
of the
archbishop's
brother
,
Rev
.
Edward
Purcell
,
who
served
as
treasurer
.
Edward
Purcell
was not a
competent
manager
of
funds
and the
bank
crashed
.
Depositors
demanded
the
sale
of
Ohio's
Catholic
churches
and
schools
so
that they
could
be
compensated
, but the
courts
ruled
that
Purcell
was
merely
a
trustee
and
did
not
own
these
properties
.
John
Baptist
Purcell
resigned
as
archbishop
of
Cincinnati
, and
although
he was
permitted
to
retain
the
title
of
archbishop
,
William
Henry
Elder
was
appointed
coadjutor
bishop
with
full
powers
of
administration
.
Purcell
spent
his
last
years
at the
Ursuline
Convent
in
St
.
Martin
,
Ohio
.
