These
six
photographs
of the
Kirtland
Temple
, the
first
house
of
worship
for the
followers
of
Joseph
Smith
,
Jr.
,
who
founded
the
Latter
Day
Saint
movement
in
western
New
York
in
1830
, were
taken
in
2002
. The
first
photograph
is
of the
exterior
of the
building
. The
second
shows
the
upper
court
boxed-in
desk
pews
(used
for
education)
. The
third
image
is
of the
lower
court
choir
lofts
(used
for
worship)
. There
is
one
loft
in
each
corner
of the
lower
court
. In the
fourth
photograph
is
the
lower
court
Aaronic
pulpits
,
located
on the
east
side
of the
temple
. These
pulpits
were for
leaders
who
had
responsibilities
related
to "
worldly
"
concerns
and
worked
to
ensure
social
,
familial
, and
financial
matters
were in
good
order
. The
bottom
level
was for the
deacons
, the
second
for the
teachers
, the
third
for the
priests
, and the
top
level
for the
bishops
. The
last
two
photographs
are of the
lower
court
Melchisedec
pulpits
,
located
on the
west
side
of the
temple
. These
pulpits
were for the
spiritual
leaders
of the
community
. The
bottom
level
was for the
elders
, the
second
for the
high
priest
, the
third
for the
high
council
and the
top
for the
first
presidency
(the
three
people
who
presided
over
the
entire
church)
. The
first
photograph
measures

"

and the
other
five
measure

. The
pulpits
and the
pews
are
among
the
distinctive
features
of the
interior
of the
Kirtland
Temple
.
Two
sets
of
pulpits
grace
the
main
floor
, with
another
two
sets
on the
second
floor
. The
seats
in the
pew
boxes
are
benches
that
can
be
shifted
from the
back
to the
front
,
thus
making
it
possible
for the
congregation
to
face
either
the
front
or the
rear
pulpits
. The
main
floor
of the
Kirtland
Temple
was
used
for
various
services
of
worship
, and the
second
floor
was a
school
for the
ministry
. The
third
floor
contained
rooms
for the "
Kirtland
High
School
"
during
the
day
and
church
quorum
meetings
in the
evening
. The
west
third-floor
room
was
Joseph
Smith
,
Jr.'s
office
.
Today
the
Kirtland
Temple
is
open
for
tours
through
the
year
. The
building
is
also
used
at
various
times
for
special
services
and
classes
. The
Kirtland
Temple
,
begun
in
1833
and
dedicated
in
1836
, was
one
of the
largest
buildings
in
northern
Ohio
.
It
is
a
combination
of
Greek
,
Georgian
,
Gothic
, and
Federal
architectural
styles
. The
building
was
designated
a
National
Historical
Landmark
in
1977
and has been
recognized
by the
Architects
Society
of
Ohio
and the
Ohio
Historical
Society
.
