Description
As the
driving
force
behind
the
establishment
of the
National
McKinley
Birthplace
Memorial
and the
McKinley
Memorial
Library
,
Joseph
Butler
was
honored
with this
bronze
bust
which
measures
37
"
tall
(93.98
cm)
.
John
Massey
Rhind
was
commissioned
to
create
bronze
busts
to
honor
individuals
who
played
a
role
in
William
McKinley's
life
or were
prominent
figures
of that
time
period
from the
Mahoning
Valley
and the
surrounding
areas
of
Ohio
and
Pennsylvania
.
Represented
among
this
group
are
steel
industry
leaders
,
political
figures
, and
philanthropists
,
many
of
whom
contributed
to the
building
of the
memorial
.
Massey
Rhind
also
created
the
statue
of
McKinley
that
stands
in the
courtyard
. The
busts
are
displayed
throughout
the
museum
,
library
and the
open-air
court
of
honor
.
Butler's
bust
is
on
display
in the
McKinley
Memorial
Library
;
however
,
it
was
originally
unveiled
on
center
stage
of the
auditorium
in the
museum
wing
during
the
building
dedication
ceremonies
on
October
5
,
1917
.
After
all
of the
other
statuary
had been
recognized
,
Butler
was
surprised
to
find
that his
likeness
was to be
added
to the
collection
.
Joseph
G
.
Butler
Jr
.
(1840-1927)
was a
native
of
Niles
and
boyhood
friend
of
William
McKinley
. In
fact
,
according
to
Butler's
autobiography
, he and
another
boy
once
saved
10-year-old
McKinley
from
drowning
while
they were
all
swimming
in a
local
creek
.
Later
,
Butler
would
serve
as a
respected
leader
in the
steel
industry
who
maintained
valuable
contacts
in the
state
and
federal
governments
,
including
McKinley
. He
campaigned
for
McKinley
during
both
of his
presidential
runs
and was
one
of the
last
local
supporters
to
see
the
president
in
Canton
as he
prepared
to
leave
for his
fatal
visit
to
Buffalo
. In
addition
to
founding
the
National
McKinley
Birthplace
Memorial
in
Niles
and the
Butler
Institute
of
American
Art
in
Youngstown
, he
organized
fundraising
for the
McKinley
Memorial
in
Canton
, the
Youngstown
Public
Library
, and
St
.
Elizabeth's
Hospital
in
Youngstown
.
William
McKinley
(1843-1901)
, the
twenty-fifth
president
of the
United
States
, was
born
in
Niles
,
Ohio
. He
enlisted
in the
army
at the
outbreak
of the
Civil
War
and,
after
being
mustered
out
,
studied
law
and
opened
a
law
office
in
Canton
,
Ohio
.
McKinley
served
in the
U.S
.
Congress
for
14
years
, and
became
president
in
1897
,
largely
due
to the
influence
of
Marcus
Hanna
,
boss
of the
Cleveland
political
machine
.
McKinley
was
most
noted
for his
foreign
policy
and the
conduct
of the
Spanish-American
War
in
1898
.
It
was
during
McKinley's
administration
that the
U.S
.
acquired
its
first
overseas
possessions
in the
Philippines
,
Guam
, and
Puerto
Rico
. He was
re-elected
in
1900
, but was
assassinated
by

in

. His
