Dearest Lida
I wish when you read these lines
you would do so, believing that they were written
by one who loves you tenderly and truly, and
more than he loves all else in this world.
I shall write plainly, but I hope you
will not take offence, or think that I wish to
pain you. I would rather endure a hundred
pangs, than to inflict one upon you.
I did [underlined] think that you were serious, and in
earnest in the promise you made a week
ago, and I was [underlined] disappointed when I
learned that you were not. I would have
been false to all my former protestations
if I had not been disappointed and grieved
