Description	This biography of Salmon Portland Chase was commissioned by his daughters and written shortly after his death in 1873. Published by D. Appleton and Co. of New York, it is 669 pages long and measures 5.75 by 9.25 inches (14.61 by 23.50 cm). Chapter three, which deals with the three years Chase spent with his uncle in Ohio, between 1820 and 1823, is included here. It addresses education, religious life, and youthful pranks of the future statesman. Chase was born in Cornish, New Hampshire. In 1820, he moved to Ohio to live first in Worthington, then in Cincinnati, with his uncle, Episcopal Bishop Philander Chase. Chase graduated from Dartmouth College. After passing the bar in 1829, Chase practiced law in Cincinnati and was well-known for his strong anti-slavery views. He enjoyed a successful political career, serving as U.S. senator from 1849 until 1855, governor of Ohio from 1856-1860, secretary of the treasury under Abraham Lincoln from 1861 to 1864, and chief justice of the supreme court from 1864 until 1873.
