Bradley
Temple
in
Lakeside
,
Ohio
.
Bradley
Temple
was
built
in
1887
.
It
was
dedicated
on
July
4
of that
year
by
Helen
Bradley
as a
memorial
to her
husband
Captain
Alva
Bradley
. A
well-known
ship
captain
and
fleet
owner
from the
Vermilion
area
,
Bradley
was the
namesake
of
Thomas
Alva
Edison
,
whose
family
lived
in
nearby
Milan
,
Ohio
. The
Bradley
family
often
visited
Lakeside
after
moving
to
Cleveland
when
the
wooden
shipbuilding
industry
in
Vermilion
collapsed
. The
Bradley
Temple
was
used
for
children's
programming
and
Sunday
School
, and
Lakeside
High
School
held
its
first
commencement
there on
May
26
,
1892
.
Mrs
.
Bradley
included
a
stipulation
in her will that if the
Bradley
Temple
ever
ceased
to be
used
for
children's
work
,
ownership
would
revert
back
to the
Bradley
family
.
Lakeside
,
known
as the
Chautauqua
of the
Great
Lakes
, was
established
in
1873
as a
Christian
Methodist
summer
resort
and
camp
meeting
grounds
. The
original
section
of
170
acres
along
the
shore
of
Lake
Erie
in
Danbury
Township
,
Ottawa
County
, was
purchased
by the
Lakeside
Company
. The
Central
Ohio
Methodist
Conference
then
created
a
Camp
Meeting
Association
to
work
with the
Lakeside
Company
to
develop
the
property
and
conduct
meetings
.
People
flocked
to
Lakeside
for
revival
meetings
, but
once
men
and
women
were
converted
, they
did
not
need
to
return
. In
efforts
to
attract
repeat
visitors
,
Lakeside
held
a
Sunday
school
assembly
prior
to the
camp
meeting
in
1877
, with
educational
and
recreational
programs
.
Although
some
did
not
approve
, the
assembly
was a
success
.
Reverend
and
Mrs
.
B.T
.
Vincent
,
brother
and
sister-in-law
of the
founder
of
New
York
Chautauqua
,
took
over
the
assembly
in
1879
and
developed
the
modern
program
to
include
music
,
art
, and
secular
education
.
