German
immigrant
, was
convicted
and

of his

portrait
of
Charles
Bach
.
Charles
and
Mary
Bach
settled
on a
small
farm
in
Milton
Center
,
Ohio
. The
couple
had
difficulties
from the
beginning
and
Charles
was
physically
abusive
.
One
recurring
problem
was that
Mary
refused
to
sign
the
deed
to
sell
their
property
.
Charles
was
arrested
and
served
time
in
jail
.
Mary
filed
for
divorce
in
August
1881
.
Charles
returned
home
,
however
, and
lived
in the
barn
.
One
day
he
left
Mary
with a
list
of
chores

complete

nightfall
.
When
he
returned
home
and
found
that
nothing
had been
done
all
day
, he
lost
his
temper
and
brutally
murdered
his
wife
with a
corn
cutter
. The
next
morning
,
Charles
Bach
and the
couple's
children
walked
to a
neighbor's
house
,
where
Bach
gave
the
neighbor
all
of his
money
for
care
for the
children
. On the
morning
of
October
11
,
1881
,
Charles
Bach
walked
into
Bowling
Green
,
Ohio
and
confessed
to
Sheriff
T.C
.
Reid
.
Charles
Bach
was
found
guilty
of
murder
in the
first
degree
. His
lawyers
appealed
the
case
to the
Supreme
Court
of
Ohio
based
on
procedural
errors
at the
trial
, but
Bach
was
again
found
guilty
. He was
hanged
on
Friday
,
October
12
,
1883
