Gardner
Clark
Bartlett
(1867-1938)
was
born
in
LaGrange
in
Lorain
County
,
Ohio
. She was the
daughter
of a
Civil
War
veteran
and
lived
in
Lorain
County
for a
little
over
three
years
.
Curtis
Clark
,
whose
parents
were
well
known
in
Elyria
,
legally
adopted
her, and she
moved
to
Rochester
,
New
York
, to
live
with him.
When
Bartlett's
singing
talent
was
discovered
they
moved
to
Boston
,
where
she
could
get
proper
training
. She
became
very
well-known
in the
East
and in
Europe
,
where
she
instructed
singing
as
well
. She
married
James
W
.
Bartlett
on
September
26
,
1899
.
Bartlett
was
performing
in
England
when
World
War
I
broke
out
. She
could
not
leave
the
country
,
so
she
began
assisting
as an
organizer
with
medical
supplies
and
raising
funds
for the
hospitals
. She
eventually
became
president
of
one
of the
largest
hospitals
in
France
. She was
known
for
wearing
a
purple
cloak
and
acquired
the
nickname
"
Sister
Beatrice.
"
Eventually
rumors
circulated
that she was a
German
spy
. She was
never
able
to
overcome
them
even
with the
help
of
government
officials
, and she
resided
in
Elyria
,
Ohio
while
trying
to
clear
her
name
.
