Description	Seven photographs document the Marion Palace Theatre in Marion, Ohio. The first photograph, which measures 5.5" x 3.5" (13.97 x 8.89 cm), shows the interior of the theatre after restoration in 1988. Six other photographs document the interior of the theatre in the 1930s, including the Wurlitzer organ, statues, upper balcony lighting, and ornamentation. The photographs are 6.5" x 4.25" (16.51 x 10.8 cm). The splendor of this vaudeville movie palace represented the state of the art in "atmospheric" theatres. Built at a cost of approximately one-half million dollars, renowned architect John Eberson designed the theatre. Opening night, August 30, 1928, found patron lines stretched for two blocks in either direction as they eagerly waited to buy tickets. The daytime price was $.25 and the evening cost was $.50 to see the many vaudeville acts at the theatre. A Moorish architectural courtyard was intended to give theater-goers the feeling of being entertained under the open skies with twinkling stars and circulating clouds at dusk. Stuffed birds were suspended from the ceiling. The alcove on the main floor's west wall houses Eberson's signature stuffed parrot. Classic statues adorn the courtyard walls. Eberson's company mass-produced the sculptures, which allowed for the completion of the theatre in record time. The orchestra pit, built for live performances, seats 25 musicians and features a rising Wurltizer pipe organ. Screens on either side of the stage conceal the pipes. The three-story fly-loft over the stage allows for Broadway productions, and there is an internal ramp from street level to bring large vehicles and animals to the stage. The auditorium seats 1420 people. A fictitious band of family crests decorates the proscenium arch. The exterior presents a dramatic entrance with a marquee of 560 clear bulbs underneath, while another 375 bulbs light up the 50-foot tall Palace sign. As the vaudeville era gave way to the movie trade, the building was leased to Paramount Pictures for a time. Under the leadership of the Palace Guard, the citizens of Marion rallied together to purchase this historic facility in 1976 and carefully refurbish it.
