Description	This record book documents goods shipped through the firm of M.W. Earheart on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which connected Evansville, Indiana and Toledo, Ohio. Information on the bills of lading includes the names of the canal boat in which the cargo was carried and the master of the boat. Bulk agricultural products such as shell corn, wheat, wool, pork, and lard traveled on the canal to Ohio and eastern destinations. Toledo, as an intersection point on Lake Erie and both east/west and north/south canals, played a significant role in this type of commerce. Cargo on two of the bills of lading shown here is destined for Cincinnati, Ohio, showing the connection of the Wabash and Erie Canal to the Miami Canal. This selection of 9 bills of lading is from an unpaginated volume of approximately 185 pages, and measuring 8.7" x 13" (22 x 33 cm).

Earheart Bill of Lading, APril 27, 1847] LaFayette April 27, 1847 [illustration of canal boat on canal] SHIPPED, in good order, by MW Earhart on board the good Canal Boat Dave Tod whereof CA Jewett is Master, the following Articles, marked, numbered and consigned as below, and which are to be deliv= ered in like good order to Consigneeds, with dispatch. In Witness Whereof. The Master of said Boat hath affirmed unto 3 [line] Bills Lading of this tenor and date, one of which being accomplished, the other to stand void. MARKS. BBLS. OWNERS. CARE OF. CONSIGNEE. Twelve Hundred Care of 1200 Pnd Shelled [illegible] Proven Weight Godard Main Corn /17200 " Onskany Falls Toledo N.Y.
