A hfe resident of Wadsworth, Mr. Young had devoted his entire business career of 47 years to the Company and had been president since 1928. His father, the late E. J. Young, founded the Company in 1895. At the same time the Board also announced the retirement of Mr L. H. Meade, of Metuchen, N. J., as chairman of the Board of Directors, a position he has held since 1928. In a statement, Board members said: "We sincerely appreciate the years of faithful and valuable service rendered by Mr. Young and Mr. Meade and wish them many years of health and happiness." Both Mr. Young and Mr. Meade are well-known in the match and lumber industries and have been important factors in the Company's affairs and growth. Served 47 Years Don Young first joined his father's Company on Oct, 1, 1909, making his start in the payroll department. Successive positions he held in the Company included paymaster, purchasing agent, assistant to the president, vice-president, and president. He was vice-president for about 10 years before he was elected president in 1928. Active in civic affairs, Mr. Young for several years was on the board of directors of area Boy Scouts. He also served as an elder and deacon in the Lutheran Church. Mr. Young became a member of Beta Theta Pi, national fraternity, while attending Wittenberg College, where he was graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1907. He played on the school's first basket¬ ball team and also played baseball in college. Majored in Chemistry He took more college work at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in chemistry, and received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from that university in 1909. He played clarinet in the first band established at the University and also played flute in the University Musical Club. Mr. Young is a member of the Masonic Lodge, F. & A. M., and holds membership in the Akron City Club, the Portage Country Club and the Congress Lake Country Club. Mr. Young and his wife reside at 542 Broad St., "Wadsworth, in a home built in 1930. He has two sons and two daughters. Robert is secretary of Ohio Boxboard in Rittman and Bill operates a ranch out west. Two daughters live in Akron — Mrs. H. J. (Virginia) Holshuh, and Mrs. WiUiam D. (Mary Jo) Wise. Mr. Young's brother, Wayne, is chairman of the board of Ohio Boxboard and president of Ohio Injector. Plans Extensive Travel Mr. Young and his wife left for six weeks in Europe the first of August. He is an experienced and enthusiastic traveler and plans to do a lot of traveling during his retirement. DON YOUNG Outstanding tribute was paid to Mr. Young by more than 50 close friends and associates who gathered July 16 to honor him with a farewell party at the Akron City Club. Referring to the familiar and oft-quoted remark of Will Rogers— "I never knew a man I didn't like" — Host Joe Neath said: "I can't think of a man or woman anywhere that doesn't like Don Young. I imagine when he was a freshman at Wittenberg College he came across a professor who lectured his students to 'get wisdom, know¬ ledge, get all these things, but get understanding.'
