Description	This warrant identifies the first land sold from the "Symmes Purchase" also known as the "Miami Purchase." The warrant measures 3.14 by 5.51 inches (8 x 14 cm). John Cleves Symmes, a Revolutionary War veteran, member of the Continental Congress and associate judge of the New Jersey Supreme Court, organized the second major settlement in Cincinnati. Symmes purchased a million acres of land between the two Miami Rivers. The first land that Symmes resold was to his friend and business associate Benjamin Stites, a soldier and Indian trader who established Columbia, the first settlement in the area, in 1789. Symmes arrived the following year and established his own settlement at North Bend. His daughter Anna married a young career soldier named William Henry Harrison. Symmes encountered many problems when Congress later reduced his tract of land to considerably less than a million acres. He continued to grant warrants for lands to which he had no legal right. Occasionally, Symmes sold land to one person in Ohio, while his associates in New Jersey issued a warrant for the same land to a buyer in that state. These conflicts took many years to resolve.

Full Text	No. 1 MIAMI LAND-WARRANT. This entitles Benjamin Stites his Heirs of Assigns, to locate one Section, in which the Fee of 640 Acres shall pass, subject to the Terms of settle- ment. Dated the sevent teenth Day of December A.D. 1787. Signed by John Cleves Symmes. Countersigned by Benjamin Stites Speshel At the point betwixt the mouth of the little maime and the ohio in the pint.
