Description
These
six
ceramic
pieces
were
created
by
Mary
Louise
McLaughlin
, a
leader
in the
art
pottery
movement
of the
nineteenth
century
. The
first
item
is
an
early
experimental
piece
of
Losanti
ware
made
and
signed
by
Mary
Louise
McLaughlin
in
1887
.
It
is
a
5-inch
(12.7
cm)
tall
vase
embossed
with
leaves
and
vines
. In
1881
,
McLaughlin
made
the
second
piece
, a
12.5-inch
(31.75
cm)
vase
.
It
is
hand
painted
with
floral
motif
underglaze
decorations
. A
third
piece
made
in
1879
is
a
6.75-inch
(17.14
cm)
vase
decorated
with a
white
floral
motif
. The
fourth
piece
is
a
9.625-inch
(24.44
cm)
vase
made
by
McLaughlin
in
1893
.
It
is
decorated
with a
pink
oriental
chrysanthemum
motif
. The
fifth
piece
is
a
7.5-inch
(19.05
cm)
canteen-shaped
vase
made
in
1880
. The
final
piece
is
an
8.75-inch
(22.22
cm)
plate
.
It
is
decorated
with a
swirling
chrysanthemum
motif
and was
made
in
1879
.
Mary
Louise
McLaughlin
(1847-1939)
was
one
of the
first
female
art
potters
in the
United
States
. She
attended
the
McMicken
School
of
Design
in
Cincinnati
(later
the
Cincinnati
Art
Academy)
and
exhibited
her
wares
at the
Philadelphia
Exposition
in
1876
. She
experimented
with the
long-secret
process
of
limoges
faience
, a
method
of
decorating
china
with
opaque
colored
glazes
. Her
method
received
an
honorable
mention
at the
1878
Paris
Universal
Exposition
. She
founded
the
Cincinnati
Pottery
Club
in
1879
. The
Pottery
Club
met
and
worked
at
Rookwood
Pottery
from
1881
until
1883
,
when
they were
banished
from
Rookwood
. For a
number
of
years
,
McLaughlin
shifted
her
energies
to
other
media
,
including
woodcarving
,
metalworking
,
painting
, and
etching
, but
returned
to
pottery
in
1898
. Her
new
line
was
known
as
Losantiware
, a
name
derived
from
Losantiville
, the
original
name
of
Cincinnati
. Her
Losantiware
was
exhibited
at the
1900
Paris
Universal
Exposition
and at the
1901
Pan-American
Exposition
where
it
won
a
bronze
medal
.
