Description
On
May
10
,
1890
, a
group
of
women
formed
the
Soldier's
Monument
Association
, with
Mary
Moore
as
president
. By
1896
they had
collected
$1116.85
toward
the
$1744
cost
of the
monument
. The
monument
was
dedicated
on
May
30
,
1901
with
5,000
people
in
attendance
. The
streets
of
Mechanicsburg
were
elaborately
decorated
and
crowded
with
people
.
Members
of the
Grand
Army
of the
Republic
(G.A.R.)
from
Mechanicsburg
and
Catawba
took
part
in the
procession
.
It
stands
approximately
25
'
(7.62
meters)
high
.
More
than
200
Civil
War
veterans
are
buried
in
Mechanicsburg's
Maple
Grove
Cemetery
.
One
of them,
Thomas
W
.
Thompson
, was a
Congressional
Medal
of
Honor
recipient
(1921)
for his
four
years
of
service
and
valor
at the
Battle
of
Chancellorsville
.
