Description	The Mentor Library Company record book begins with the articles of association and includes account listings for each shareholder and a listing of books available. The record ends in 1859 when the group ceased activity due to lack of interest. The book is 6.3" x 8" (16 cm x 20 cm) and is unpaginated. The Mentor Library Company organized on February 22, 1819. This subscription library operated differently than modern public libraries. Members chose a president, four trustees, a treasurer, and a librarian yearly. Officers were charged $0.25 if they were absent from quarterly meetings. Shares in the library association were sold for $2.50 each, and members paid an additional $0.25 per year. Shares could be bought or sold as long as there were no outstanding fines. Sixty-four original stockholders are listed in the record book. The library's collection, which was housed in private homes, began with 79 books and grew to 194. Members could check out a book at the quarterly meetings. If two members wanted the same book, it was given to the highest bidder. Books could be exchanged in between meetings, but the member who signed out the book was still responsible for it. Members were charged $0.12 plus $0.02 per day for late books, in addition to charges for damages.
