Description	These two items belonged to Nettie R. Shepherd, a student at Mechanicsburg Public School in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Her 7" x 4.25" (18 x 11 cm) report card for 1894-1895 shows her scores for Spelling, Reading, Writing, Language, Arithmetic, Geography, and Drawing, as well as marks for attendance and deportment, or conduct. McGuffey's New Eclectic Spelling Book was a staple for students in the second half of the nineteenth century. This copy, which is 144 pages long and measures 4.5" x 6.5" (11.43 x 16.5 cm), contains an inscription on the front inside cover. Dated January 6, 1889, it reads: "Be a good girl at school and mind your teachers." McGuffey's readers, which focused on teaching reading through stories or poems on themes of morality, sold more than 122 million copies over the course of the nineteenth century. Although no author is mentioned on the title page of the book, McGuffey's New Eclectic Spelling Book is believed to have been written by William Holmes McGuffey's younger brother, Alexander. This 1865 edition was published by Van Antwerp, Bragg and Company in Cincinnati and New York.
