These
three
photographs
show
the
activities
of the
National
Cash
Register
Company
(NCR)
during
and
after
the
1913
flood
in
Dayton
,
Ohio
. The
first
photograph
depicts
one
of
flood
relief
offices
on the
tenth
floor
of the
NCR
building
. A
sign
in
front
of the
desk
reads
, "
Get
tickets
for
meals
at the
Cash
Register
(Here).
" A
second
photograph
shows
a
kitchen
set
up
on the
first
floor
of
NCR
Building
No
.

,
daughter
of
company
founder

Patterson
,
is
in the
center
of the
photograph
. A
final
photograph
is
an
aerial
view
of
tents
set
up
on
NCR
grounds
to
house
flood
refugees
. The
photographs
measure
approximately
9.5
"
x
7.25
"
(24.13
x
18.42
cm)
. In
late
March
of
1913
, an
unusually
heavy
rainstorm
moved
into
Ohio
.
It
rained
steadily
for
five
days
and the
streams
all
over
Ohio
rose
rapidly
. By the
third
day
of the
downpour
,
levees
were
overtopped
and
many
towns
suffered
disastrous
flooding
.
Floodwaters
of the
Miami
,
Stillwater
and
Mad
Rivers
inundated
the
greater
part
of
Dayton
. The
flood
claimed
more
than
300
lives
in
Dayton
and
surrounding
areas
, and
brought
more
than
$100,000,000
in
property
damage
.
Great
fires
that
raged
unchecked
added
to the
destruction
and the
loss
of
life
.
