Description	Surveyor Levi Whipple drew this preliminary plat for Ohio University in 1800, four years before the university was founded. Two townships were set aside for a college by the legislature of the Northwest Territory the previous year. This plat of townships eight and nine in the fourteenth range includes a public square and commons as well as lots designated as places to build homes for faculty members. The preliminary survey reflects Ohio University's history as the oldest institution of higher education in the state. The plat measures 17 by 22 inches (43.18 by 55.88 cm). Ohio University was founded in 1804, one year after Ohio became a state. Revolutionary War veterans from New England conceived the idea for a university in 1786, when they purchased land in the Northwest Territory through the Ohio Company of Associates. The Northwest Ordinance, passed in 1787, also encouraged "schools and the means of education." Funding for a university came from revenue earned from leases in two townships in the Ohio Company Purchase. Ohio University opened in 1808 with three students. The school granted its first diplomas in 1815. Enrollment remained small and the university graduated only about 145 students in its first six decades. Its fortunes gradually began to improve late in the 19th century, particularly after it started receiving state support in the early 1880s.

Full Text	PLAT of a Town, with out Lots etc. -- -- Situate in the Ninth Township and fourteenth Range in the Ohio Companys purchase Made in pursuance of a resolve of the Legislature of the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio, passed December 18th 1799 N.B A is a public square containing 4,2 acres B.B contains 3,6 acres each designed for the Colleges, Presidents & Professors houses, gardens etc 77 Town Lots contain 1/2 an acre each and are numbered from 1 to 77 -- 106 Out Lots of five acres each, numbered from 1 to 106 -- And about 300 acres of Commons, besides Streets & roads: included within the Lines C.D.E.F.G.H and thence up the River to C. -- Levi Whipple Surveyor. --
