Description	Three Ohio University commencement programs from the 1820s offer insight into education of the period as well as social and political issues. After prayers, songs, and speeches, the university presented diplomas to graduates. Topics for student addresses in this decade include the effects of the proposed canal system, education for women, and republican government. Of special note is the 1828 program, which lists a speech entitled "Claims of Liberia" that was delivered by John Newton Templeton, Ohio University's first African American graduate. In the school's early decades commencement was generally held in August or September. In the late 19th century, the ceremony was more commonly held in June. The programs range in size from 7.75 by 6 inches (19.69 by 15.24 cm) to 6.75 by 8.5 inches (17.15 by 21.6 cm). Ohio University was founded in 1804, one year after Ohio became a state. Revolutionary War veterans from New England conceived the idea for a university in 1786, when they purchased land in the Northwest Territory through the Ohio Company of Associates. The Northwest Ordinance, passed in 1787, also encouraged "schools and the means of education." Funding for a university came from revenue earned from leases in two townships in the Ohio Company Purchase. Ohio University opened in 1808 with three students. The school granted its first diplomas in 1815. Enrollment remained small and the university graduated only about 145 students in its first six decades. Its fortunes gradually began to improve late in the 19th century, particularly after it started receiving state support in the early 1880s.
