Description	Five letters written by Ohio Woman Suffrage Association President Harriet Taylor Upton in 1912 and 1913 document the organization's assistance in establishing a suffrage organization in Henry County, Ohio. The letters are one page each and measure 8.5" x 11" (21.59 x 27.94 cm). Harriet Taylor Upton (1854-1945) was born in Ravenna, Ohio and lived much of her life in Warren, Ohio. She served as treasurer of the National Woman's Suffrage Association and coordinated the business of the association from her home in Warren from 1903 to 1910. In 1918, Upton became the first woman appointed to the Warren Board of Education. After Congress passed the 19th Amendment in 1920, giving women the right to vote, Upton became the first woman to serve as vice chairman of the National Executive Committee and made an unsuccessful run for Congress. The letters are part of the collection of Vadae G. Meekison (1884-1981), who was born in West Virginia and lived in Kansas, Michigan, and Indiana before moving to Ohio with her husband George. She received her law degree from Valparaiso (Indiana) University and was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1907. When she began her law practice in Napoleon in 1926, she became one of the first women to practice law in Henry County. She was a critical figure in Ohio's women's suffrage movement because of her work as a speaker, petitioner, and local organizer. Her papers include personal correspondence and form letters from Ohio Suffrage Association President Harriet Taylor Upton and other officers, describing plans for pro-suffrage campaign strategy and lecture tours in Henry County and northwest Ohio.
