Description	Three letters document the experiences of Benjamin Askue Jr., who served as a field nurse in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O. V. I.). The first letter was written from Camp Chase on July 24, 1861, shortly after the regiment was formed. Askue discusses his anti-slavery convictions and family business. It is four pages long and measures 4.75 by 7.5 inches (12.07 by 19.05 cm). Next is a four-page letter in which Askue praises Colonel Rutherford B. Hayes, who he describes as a gentleman. He discusses camp life and the comments on the number of Confederate prisoners who have been captured. It measures 7.75 by 12.25 inches (19.69 by 31.75 cm) and is dated April 7, 1862. Last is a four-page letter from March 8, 1862. It measures 5.23 by 8 inches (13.34 by 20.32 cm). Askue discusses the possibility of becoming hospital steward in an African American unit and comments on the efforts of Lucy Hayes to ensure the welfare of the men in the regiment. Askue (1833-1906), a resident of Jefferson, Ohio, was a self-taught practitioner of homeopathic medicine. These letters are part of a large collection of Askue letters and artifacts held by the Cincinnati Medical Heritage Center.

Full Text	I have just received your letter and hurry to answer it for I guess it will be last in this camp for we will leave here to morrow for some other place. I do not know where, perhaps to Washington. Mr. Brigden is here and is to take charge of the things he has the keys for my things and I have sent one blanket for one will be as much as I want to carry and my boots also I send the old letters I would like to take them along to read but every little helps and I am to have an over coat to carry and some provisions As soon as we get to our destination & I have a little time I will write again I got the money and stamps all right and will get my picture taken the first chance I get and send it to you but cannot to day or to morrow
