Description	The Piqua Female Bible Society was an influential organization in the early years of Piqua's settlement. Piqua was a frontier canal town, but the Female Bible Society sought to "civilize" its citizens. Not long after Miami County's formation in 1807, women in the Piqua area banded together to promote the study of the Bible, literacy and charitable endeavors. Rachel Johnson, one of the founders of the group, went door-to-door to recruit women of Piqua to join. This scrapbook was kept by various members of the Bible Society from 1847 to 1882. It is primarily newspaper clippings detailing the activities of the society, deaths of members, and officers' reports. It measures 5" x 8.82" (12.8 x 22.4 cm). This collection is unique in that it details the work of women in the very early decades of Ohio's history. The items included in Ohio Memory are part of a larger collection containing detailed minutes from 1818-1969, Treasurer's Reports, a Scrapbook of the Society from 1847-1882, 75th and 100th Anniversary pamphlets, and other items.
