. The
two
men
became
friends
while
working
on the
Ohio
State
Journal
in the
early
1850s
.
Although
the
volume
received
some
critical
praise
,
it
sold
few
copies
and
quickly
went
out
of
print
. The
book
is
132
pages
long
and
measures
4.5
by
7
inches
(11.43
by
17.8
cm)
.
John
James
Piatt
(1835-1917)
was
born
in
Indiana
and
moved
with his
family
to
Franklinton
,
Ohio
when
he was
six
. He
lived
with his
uncle
in
nearby
Columbus
,
attended
grammar
classes
at
Capital
University
, and
worked
as a
printer's
devil
at the
Ohio
State
Journal
.
Piatt
developed
an
interest
in
poetry
and
gained
the
attention
of
George
Prentice
,
editor
of the
Louisville
Journal
.
Prentice
hired
him as his
secretary
and
published
his
poems
in the
Journal
.
Piatt
served
as a
clerk
in the
department
of the
treasury
starting
in
1860
. He and his
wife
Sarah
Morgan
Bryan
Piatt
made
their
home
in
Georgetown
,
where
both
continued
to
write
poetry
.
After
the
Civil
War
,
Piatt
was
affiliated
with
Cincinnati
newspapers
and
served
as
librarian
of the
House
of
Representatives
. He also
served
a
consul
to
Ireland
.
William
Dean
Howells
(1837-1920)
was
born
in
Martins
Ferry
,
Ohio
. His
father
,
William
Cooper
Howells
, was a
printer
and
editor
of the
Hamilton
Intelligencer
. The
younger
Howells
began
working
for the
Ohio
State
Journal
in
1858
and
published
his
first
novel
in
1871
. He
later
served
as
editor
of The
Atlantic
Weekly
. In his
career
Howells
reportedly
wrote
nearly
40
novels
and
numerous
short
stories
,
poems
,
literary
reviews
,
magazine
articles
,
autobiographies
, and
biographies
.
Two
of his
best-known
works
are The
Rise
of
Silas
Lapham
(1885)
and A
Modern
Instance
(1881)
.
