Description	Reverend John J. Phelan of Toledo, Ohio surveyed the value of pool halls, billiard rooms, and bowling alleys as entertainment in Toledo during and shortly after World War I. In Pool, Billiards, and Bowling Alleys as a Phase of Commercialized Amusement in Toledo, Ohio, Phelan discusses the implications of moral and social ills created by visiting recreational venues, especially among youth. Phelan studied the number of businesses and collected data on sanitation, lighting, and number of arrests. He also surveyed 400 high school boys to determine that 75% of young men in Toledo visited pool halls, billiard rooms or bowling alleys on a regular basis. Non-commercialized amusements such as the Y.M.C.A. and community recreation centers are suggested as wholesome alternatives. The book is 195 pages in length and measures 5" x 7.25" (12.7 x 18.42 cm).
