early
aviation
,
gave
this
talk
on
WLEC
radio
in
Sandusky
,
Ohio
. He
designed
his
first
airplane
in
1910
,
built
it
over
two
years
, and
flew
it
in
1912
.
Ausmus
gives
a
fascinating
description
of the
nuts
and
bolts--literally--of
building
early
aircraft
"on the
third
floor
of a
building
by
mantel
light
" and the
excitement
and
hazards
of
flying
such
machines
. He also
recounts
the
adventures
and
contributions
of
other
local
aviators
and
companies
,
including
Tom
Benoist
and the
Roberts
Motor
Company
. The
speech
is
twelve
pages
and
measures

Born
in
Cleveland
,
Ohio
,
Ausmus
spent
much
of his
youth
in an
orphanage
. He
eventually
settled
in
Sandusky
,
Ohio
. As an
early
instructor
and
designer
of
aircraft
, he
worked
closely
with the
prominent
pioneer
aviator
Tom
Benoist
,
who
had
established
a
flying
school
at
Sandusky's
Battery
Park
.
Ausmus's
flights
with the
Benoist
Aeroplane
Company
qualified
him for
entry
into the
Early
Birds
, an
organization
of
pioneer
aviators
who
piloted
heavier-than-air
planes
prior
to
December
of
1913
.
Ausmus
enlisted
in the
198th
Air
Squadron
at
Columbus
,
Ohio
in
1913
and was
discharged
as a
sergeant
at
Wichita
Falls
,
Texas
,
where
he had
trained
pilots
during
World
War
I
(1917-1919)
. In
1947
,
Ausmus
was
appointed
permanent
service
officer
of the
local
American
Legion
. He also
held
the
post
of
service
officer
of the
Erie
County
Soldier's
Relief
Commission
for
twenty
years
. He
retired
in
1969
,
after
devoting
much
of his
life
to
working
with the
veterans
of
Erie
County
.
Sandusky
awarded
him its
Outstanding
Community
Service
award
in
1968
. In
1970
, the
United
States
Air
Force
placed
his
name
on its
roster
of
fame
in the
Air
Force
Museum
at
Dayton
,
Ohio
.
Following
the
death
of his
wife
,
Mary
(Williams)
, in
1958
,
Ausmus
married
Ruth
Swint
.
