Atwood

Permelia
Atwood
. A
4

6-inch
image
depicts
Reverend
Ransom
Dunn
, the
first
president
of the
college
. In
December
1875
, the
college
was
legally
organized
.
It
was
dedicated
on
August
29
,
1876
and
classes
began
a
month
later
. The
first
graduation
ceremony
took
place
in
1883
.
It
is
now
known
as
University
of
Rio
Grande
and
Rio
Grande
Community
College
.
Haning
was
licensed
to
preach
in
1846
and
through
a
series
of
revivals
founded
several
congregations
in
Athens
,
Gallia
,
Meigs
, and
Vinton
counties
. He
baptized
husband
and
wife
Nehemiah
and
Permelia
Atwood
to the
Free
Will
Baptist
faith
in
1851
.
Nehemiah
desired
to
found
a
Baptist
college
, but he
died
before
he
could
accomplish
his
goal
. In his
memory
Permelia
provided
funds
to
build
Atwood
Hall
and a
dormitory
for the
school
,
called
Rio
Grande
College
, in the
town
of the
same
name
. Her
portrait
is
a
photograph
taken
just
before
her
death
.
Dunn
was a
leader
in the
Free
Will
Baptist
Church
who
was
affiliated
with the
Baptist
Academy
in
Chester
,
Meigs
County
,
Ohio
and
Hillsdale
College
in
Michigan
. He
served
as
college
president
from
1876
until
1879
.
Rio
Grande
was
one
of the
first
institutions
of
higher
learning
established
by a
woman
. From the
beginning
,
it
has had a
non-discriminatory
admission
policy
,
welcoming
students
of
both
genders
and
all
races
.
