Description	This biographical sketch is based on a journal kept by William Cooper Howells, father of author William Dean Howells (1837-1920). The 206-page volume, published by Robert Clarke Company of Cincinnati, measures 8" x 5.5" (20.32 x 13.97 cm). Selections included here are the introduction by William Dean Howells, table of contents, and chapters fifteen through seventeen. These pages relate to life in Mount Pleasant and Chillicothe, Ohio, the presidential election of 1836, and slavery. In his autobiography, Howells documents his early life in Wales, emigration to America, and settlement in Ohio. The book also discusses war with England, the growth of political parties, and Howells' education, business ventures, and personal life. William Dean Howells wrote the concluding chapter in the third person. He documents his father's political affiliation and civic activities and concludes with the elder Howells' sudden death.
