letter
to his
son-in-law
John
Pitkin
on the
back
of a
notice
promising
free
tuition
to
one
student
from
each
county
in
Ohio
. He
is
hopeful
that the
local
ministers
will
select
suitable
young
men
.
Pupils
from
Washington
City
,
Alabama
,
Mississippi
, and
Arkansas
have
arrived
for the
summer
term
. He
states
that he has
resigned
as
president
of the
university
, but will
stay
on
until
a
successor
can
be
found
. The
four-page
letter
measures
8.25
by
10
inches
(20.96
by
25.4
cm)
.
Wilson
(1768-1851)
served
as
president
of
Ohio
University
from
1824-1839
. A
native
of
North
Carolina
,
Wilson
served
as
pastor
of the
Chillicothe
Presbyterian
Church
and
taught
at the
Chillicothe
Academy
before
accepting
the
job
as
president
of
Ohio
University
.
During
his
tenure
, the
university
granted
its
first
master's
degree
and
added
a
department
of
English
studies
to
prepare
men
for
business
careers
and as
teachers
in the
common
schools
.
Ohio
University
was
founded
in
1804
,
just
one
year
after
Ohio
became
a
state
.
Revolutionary
War
veterans
conceived
the
idea
for a
University
in
1786
when
they
purchased
land
in the
Northwest
Territory
through
the
Ohio
Company
of
Associates
.
Funding
for a
university
came
from
revenue
earned
by
two
townships
in the
Ohio
Company
purchase
.
Ohio
University
opened
in
1808
with
three
students
. The
school
granted
its
first
bachelor's
degrees
in
1815
.
Enrollment
remained
small
and the
university
graduated
only
about
145
students
in its
first
six
decades
. Its
fortunes
gradually
begin
to
improve
late
in the
19th
century
,
particularly
after
it
started
receiving
state
support
in the
early
1880s
.
