These
two
quilts
were
made
by
Hannah
Johnston
Aiken
(1825-1888)
of
Shelby
County
,
Ohio
.
First
is
an
81
"
x
98
"
(205.74
x
248.92
cm)
red
and
green
floral
applique
quilt
. This
type
of
quilt
was
very
popular
in
Ohio
between
1840
and
1860
,
although
they were
made
until
the
end
of the
nineteenth
century
.
Unlike
pieced
quilts
where
scraps
of
fabrics
were
used
, these
quilts
required
a
special
purchase
of
yardage
so
that
all
the
colors
would
match
. The
colored
shapes
were
sewn
on
top
of the
white
ground
,
often
in
floral
motifs
.
Due
to the
added
expense
and
sewing
required
,
many
of these
pre-Civil
War
appliqued
quilts
were
regarded
as
special
and have been
handed
down
through
generations
.
Women
often
made
these
quilts
for
important
occasions
such
as
weddings
. The
second
quilt
is
a
white
patchwork
quilt
made
in a
double
saw
tooth
pattern
using
brown
,
white
and
red
patterned
squares
with a
green
border
.
It
measures
79.5
"
x
93.5
"
(201.93
x
237.49
cm)
.
Hannah
Johnston
Aiken
lived
her
entire
life
in
Laramie
Township
,
Shelby
County
. She
married
James
W
.
Aiken
on
November
6
,
1851
. They had
three
children
,
William
,
Maggie
E
. and
Clara
B
. The
quilts
are
part
of the
Feth
Quilt
Collection
,
which
was
donated
to the
Shelby
County
Historical
Society
by
Josephine
Feth
, a
descendant
of the
Cain
and
Aiken
families
.
