Description	This 15.75" long x 5.125" wide x 2.66" high (40 cm x 13.02 cm x 6.76 cm) amputation kit and 8.88" long x 3.75" wide x 1.5" high (22.56 cm x 9.53 cm x 3.81 cm) trephining kit, a set of tools used to cut out disks of bone, usually out of the skull, belonged to Dr. Samuel Martin of Xenia, Ohio, and are typical of medical instruments used in the mid-19th century. His ivory pocket calendar, which fans out for each day of the week (excluding Sunday), shows how a physician, traveling to his patients on horseback, might keep track of his daily appointments. It measures 3.5" long x 1.5" wide x.125" high (8.89 cm x 3.81 cm x.32 cm). Samuel Martin, M.D. (1796-1879) was born in Ireland and was educated at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He came to Xenia, Ohio in 1834 and purchased the practice of Dr. Joseph Templeton. Martin received an honorary doctorate of medicine degree from the College of Medicine of Ohio (Cincinnati) in 1837. He joined the Ohio State Medical Society in 1853 and was a member of the Board of Trustees that developed the Ohio College of Dental Surgery in Cincinnati. Dr. Martin served as a preceptor for a number of men wanting to become doctors in the Xenia area. His pupils recalled horseback recitations 20 to 40 minutes in length, interrupted by occasional stops to examine and prescribe for patients. During a cholera outbreak, Martin fitted part of his stable as a hospital and there he cared for homeless Irishmen until they were able to return to their work on the railroad.
