Description	Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company created the Buckeye Land Company to develop sites and build affordable housing for its employees. This 4" by 6" (10.16 by 15.24 cm) brochure describes the styles and prices of the homes that were available. The brochure indicates that it is the "Company's purpose to build, sell and rent these houses to employees at cost." In 1917 the Mahoning Valley's leading steel companies began constructing housing for their employees to rent or own in response to shortages of decent, affordable housing. In the aftermath of the 1916 steel strike and riot (when several blocks of East Youngstown were burned to the ground) the steel companies hoped that offering steelworkers the chance to rent or own a home would promote stability within the workplace and the community. One of the more ambitious company housing projects was undertaken by the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. In 1917, the company formed the Buckeye Land Company to oversee the construction and sale of housing. By 1919 it offered Youngstown Sheet and Tube employees housing in three neighborhoods: the Blackburn Plat, which had homes available for rent; the Loveland Farms Plat, which had homes available for sale to American families; and the Highview Plat, which had homes available for sale to foreign-born workers. Later the Buckeye Land Co. added a fourth neighborhood for Youngstown Sheet and Tube's African-American employees. These neighborhoods tried to provide a sense of community by offering a variety of social and athletic activities for the steelworkers and their families. Within ten years the Buckeye Land Co. constructed more than 700 homes with nearly 300 being sold and the remainder being rented.
