Description	These fourteen 8" x 10" (20.3 x 25.4 cm) photographs depict Shay locomotives built by the Lima Machine Works in Lima, Ohio. The locomotives included here are: locomotives included here are: G & J Backus, Seaman & Webster, James Brothers (Kane Oil Field Railroad), T.L. Hackney, F.H. Goodyear (Sinnemahoning Valley Railroad), Russell (Gilpin Tramway Company), Salt Lake Valley & Fort Douglas Railroad, Myra R. Wonderly (USAL Redwood Company), B.F. Hazelton (Mt. Jewett & Smethport Railroad), Columbia (displayed at the 1893 Columbian Exposition), Victoria Rolling Stock Company (Canadian Pacific Railway), J.J. Newman Lumber Company (Pearl & Leaf River Railroad), Kaul & Hall Lumber Company (St. Mary's & Southwestern Railroad), and D.L. Kelly Logging Company. Ephraim Shay, a Michigan lumberman, developed a locomotive that could operate on rough track, steep grades, and sharp turns. His invention attracted much attention within the logging business, as he was able to reduce the cost of hauling timber from $3.50 per thousand board feet to $1.25 per thousand board feet. Shay was granted a patent for the geared locomotive in 1881, and the Lima Machine Works acquired sole manufacturing rights. A new erecting shop was added to the Machine Works in 1884, and by the end of the decade the company built twelve to thirty-six locomotives annually. Lima Locomotive Works began in 1869 when a group of men from Upper Sandusky purchased the Lima Agricultural Company, renamed it the Lima Machine Works, and began making sawmill machinery, stationary steam engines, boilers, jig saws, lathes, and agricultural equipment. In 1878, it expanded its operations to include the production of locomotives. The company, which employed 4,000 workers in its peak production years during World War II, was the third largest producer of locomotives in the country.
