Description	The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, shown in this 9" x 6" (22.86 x 15.24 cm) photograph and 3.5" x 5.5" (8.89 x 13.97 cm) postcard, honors Cleveland's Civil War veterans. Built in 1896 by architect Levi Scofield, the monument stands 125 feet (38.10 m) high and is topped by a 15 foot (4.57 m) statue of Liberty. On the base of the monument, each side represents one of the branches of the military (infantry, cavalry, artillery, and navy) and the room inside the monument lists the names of Cleveland men who served in the war. Cleveland architect Levi T. Scofield (1847-1917) donated his time to work on the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. He is also known for designing the Mansfield Reformatory (later called the Ohio State Reformatory) in 1885. Scofield's other works include asylums for the insane at Athens (1868) and Columbus (1869), as well as Cleveland's Central High School (1878). He also designed several private residences on Cleveland's "Millionaires' Row" section of Euclid Avenue, such as the R.K. Winslow house (1878).
