Description	This ledger contains the names and addresses of 800 Dayton residents who were displaced by the flood of 1913 and housed at St. Mary's College (now the University of Dayton). It is 30 pages long and measures 8" x 13" (20.32 x 33.02 cm). St. Mary's College authorities arranged with John H. Patterson (president of National Cash Register and organizer of the flood relief efforts) to receive an unlimited number of flood sufferers, and by Wednesday night 400 refugees were given accommodations at the college. The number increased to 600 within the next 24 hours. Before the close of the week, 800 refugees were registered. At the time of the 1913 flood St. Mary's was well supplied with provisions for the boarding students who were to arrive soon. Due to the flood, classes were postponed and the provisions proved to be invaluable to feed the large number of refugees during the early days of the flood when food supplies had not yet reached Dayton. The college was extremely fortunate in having its own spring water supply, infirmary, electric light, heating plant, and laundry, which enabled it to give sanitary and comfortable accommodations throughout the two weeks the college was dedicated to relief work. The University of Dayton was founded in Dayton, Ohio, as St. Mary's College in 1850. It was originally a grammar school for boys run by the Society of Mary, a Roman Catholic religious order. The school has since evolved to become Ohio's largest private university. After several name changes, the school became the University of Dayton in 1920.
