Description
This
copybook
with
twelve
sheets
of
paper
was
used
to
teach
students
Spencerian
penmanship
, a
style
of
handwriting
developed
by
Platt
R
.
Spencer
in the
early
nineteenth
century
. The
top
of
each
page
includes
an
example
of
writing
for
student
to
copy
on the
rest
of the
page
. This
is
the
tenth
lesson
in
one
of the
four
series
. The
envelope
is
7
"
x
9
"
(17.8
x
22.86
cm)
and
includes
12
sheets
of
paper
. The
Spencerian
system
became
the
standard
for
quality
writing
from
about
1850
to
1925
, with the
height
of
popularity
in the
1890s
. The
demise
of the
skill
in the
business
world
was
precipitated
by the
advent
of the
typewriter
and the
system
of
shorthand
.
Other
new
,
less
ornate
writing
systems
became
popular
in
schools
;
many
formulated
by
students
of
Spencer
and
based
on
some
of his
principals
.
Platt
R
.
Spencer
(1800-1864)
,
born
in
E
.
Fishkill
,
New
York
,
moved
with his
mother
and
several
siblings
to
Ashtabula
County
,
Ohio
in
1810
. He
developed
a
style
of
penmanship
that he
called
"
Semi-Angular
Script
" but
which
is
more
commonly
known
as "
Spencerian
Penmanship.
" His
style
included
not
only
the
creation
of
letters
but also
exercises
for
practicing
them,
body
positions
, and
particular
full-arm
movements
(as
opposed
to
wrist
actions)
. The
exercises
were
often
performed
to the
rhythm
of
poetry
,
which
he also
wrote
.
Spencer
became
involved
in
establishing
business
colleges
in the
United
States
. His
writing
system
was
marketed
by
mail
and
taught
at his
seminary
on
North
Myers
Road
in
Geneva
Township
, in
classes
on the
road
, and in the
colleges
. His
family
also
marketed
exhibition
pieces
,
etchings
,
ink
,
pens
, and
instructional
books
.
