Description	The first book of records of St. John's Episcopal Church documents the incorporation of the church as both an ecclesiastical establishment and a corporation under Ohio law, an unusual arrangement. Also included is information about church business and issues such as membership, income, and leadership. Twenty-nine pages of the book are shown here and include information about negotiations with Bishop Philander Chase, founder of Kenyon College, and conflicts between the original founders, new settlers, and rival churches. The 143-page volume measures 8 by 12.5 inches (20.32 by 31.75 cm). St. John's Church was the first church established in central Ohio and the first Episcopal church west of the Allegheny mountains. It was founded by pioneer settler James Kilbourn, an Episcopal deacon who in 1802 purchased 16,000 acres that would become Worthington. Kilbourn led church services from 1804 until 1817, when Philander Chase became the first rector of St. John's.

Full Text	On Thursday 10th of April. 1812 I received the two following certificates from Messrs. D. Bristol and S. Beach. Worthington, March 27, 1812 To the clerk of the Protestant episcopal Church in Worthing- ton and parts adjacent, by the name of St. John's Church.[underlined St.... Church] This is to certify, that, for certain reasons, I do hereby with draw myself as a member from said church, and do not consider myself, from and after this date liable to be called upon as such. David Bristol Worthington April 1st 1812. To the clerk of the Protestant episcopal Church in Worth- ington & parts adjacent by the name of St. John's [underlined] Church. [underlined] This is therefore to certify, that, for certain reasons, I do hereby withdraw myself as a Mem- ber of said Church, and do not consider myself, from and after this date to be called upon as such.
